Communities typically organize content into folders — categories, sub-forums, nodes, discussion areas — displayed on a forum home page. This traditional experience required users to navigate through multiple clicks to locate relevant discussions, a process that proved not entirely user-friendly for new members.

Younger audiences particularly avoided forums because they were accustomed to social media experiences, which focus on immediate satisfaction and the simplest of experiences.
